Just seeing captions where people don’t assume pronouns (especially for people who don’t look like the archetypal white, skinny, masculine, hipster genderqueer) makes me want to cry with joy.

Because so often I am made to feel like I am asking TOO MUCH by telling people not to read my body, guess my pronouns, or decide my gender for me.

Don’t assume. Either don’t guess (ask yourself why it matters that you gender someone you don’t know?) or ask. It’s easy. Gendering can be violence.

Their gender isn’t ‘self-identified,’ it’s ‘self-evident!’ What they fail to understand is that self identification is the only meaningful way to determine gender. Any other method is wholly dependent upon what that doctor said way back when we were still red, wrinkly, writhing, screaming newborn messes, completely unformed as individuals and without any identity at all to speak of, too bloody and scrunchy-faced to even be called cute. The average life span of a transgendered person is twenty-three years. The statistic is shocking, until it begins to make sense. Gender non-conformists face routine exclusion and violence. Transgendered people are disproportionately poor, homeless, and incarcerated. Many of the systems and facilities intended to help low-income people are sex-segregated and thereby alienate those who don’t comply with state-imposed categories. A trans woman may not be able to secure a bed in a homeless shelter, for example. Spade writes that just as the feminist movement tended to “focus on gender-universalized white women’s experience as ‘women’s experience,’” the lesbian- and gay-rights movement has focused primarily on a white, middle-class politic, centered on marriage and mainstream social mores.

Trans describes what happened to your life after you were born and everybody but you decided who you were already but at some point you said NO THANKS i’d rather be over HERE …. Cis and trans are not descriptors of some inner truth; They expose the external imposition of an alleged truth.

Trans can be deemed to be less inclusive than Trans*.

Trans* is generally taken to mean:

Transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, non-binary, genderfluid, genderfuck, intersex, third gender, transvestite, cross-dresser, bi-gender, trans…

This is how I tend to understand trans*, too, but I wonder if everyone does interpret it this way?
